So a bunch of stuff probably happened in the early parts of Tuesday, but I admit I don’t much remember what they were. I know I had a board meeting on Zoom and some other work-related odds and ends, but that all kind of fell to the sidelines when I got a big piece of news in the late afternoon. My new glasses were in and ready to be picked up.
Backing up a little bit, my getting new glasses has been a painfully long time coming. On a very practical level, my vision stinks and I’ve been on the edge of needing progressive lenses for the last year or two. I had an eye exam over the summer and the doctor basically said I could continue to get away with single vision for a while, but the clock is ticking.
But I didn’t really want to pull the trigger on making that change, so I’ve just been doing a lot of squinting and actually taking my glasses off to read things on my phone and close up. “Good enough,” I figured.
Part of this stemmed from the fact that I was hesitant to drop the money for progressive lenses, and also because I knew I wanted new frames, but didn’t know what I wanted on that front either. Paralyzed by indecision and frugality, I kept on squinting.
Meanwhile, my old glasses have been screaming for retirement. They are so scratched up after years of abuse, drops, and being torn off my face by Henry that I basically live my life staring through a fog. For some reason I tolerated this for quite a while, but a few weeks ago something snapped and I couldn’t take it anymore. I finally got serious about getting new glasses.
I shopped around a little and eventually found some frames I really liked at, of all places, Costco. I’d been hearing lots of good things about their optical department and indeed I found something I like at a shockingly reasonable price. And I finally decided to make the dive into progressive lenses. ‘
I ordered them last week, and was told it would be 5-7 business days. Tuesday was 6 business days and I called them, now officially being driven mad by my old cloud-o-vision glasses. They checked my order and told me I was in luck, the glasses had literally just come in.
So I rushed over to pick them up. When I put them on, it was a revelation. I CAN SEE!!! I left Costco a very happy man.
Clear lenses is such an amazing treat, and I am adjusting to progressives. Yup, I’m an old guy now and had to finally admit it with this choice, but so far I am a big fan of being able to actually read stuff on my phone and computer again without struggle. And I went with a different look.
I dropped the somewhat innocuous brown and went back to a classic black, which is the look I had a bunch of years back. It’s a little bolder, and so far I like it. And I think I’m in good company with the more pronounced black frames. Who wore it best?
I am liking the new specs. Especially the part where I can see again. Sight. Vision. I highly recommend it.
