Honest Parenting
Parenting is a daily act of high-wire improv without a net in front of a live studio audience. It’s a joyous, stressful and sometimes terrifying endeavor and we are all doing our best each and every day. Particularly in a time when we face so many societal divisions and stress, being a parent often means feeling isolated and judged. It doesn’t have to be that way.
Honest Parenting is an idea that acknowledges that none of us has all the answers, but we all have stories. Our stories are our experiences, and it is our experiences that shape us, build us up and drive us forward. Sharing is caring and as parents we can benefit from community and learn from each other’s experiences.
Welcome to Honest Parenting. Check out my story and I hope you’ll share yours. We’re all in this together and there is strength in numbers.

The Passion and the Pond
After a few days that were kind of filled with various activities for the kids, today was a pretty low-key summer day. I was working in my office and the kids were playing really well together. Lately they've been playing school quite a bit, which is a callback to...
Boys’ Weekend!
Early Friday morning, Erin and Amelia got on a flight to spend the weekend with our friend Kalllin in Seattle. They started the traditino of a girls' weekend getaway last summer when the three of them went to New York City. One of the big draws to New York for Amelia...
Those Who Live in Gold Houses
Henry just started doing summer sessions with a dyslexia tutor and he is rocking it so far.
School’s Out For Summer
Somehow, this past week was already the last week of school for Amelia and Henry. I know what the calendar says, and while I may not be as plugged into current events as much as I once was, I do still note the passage of days, weeks and months and was on some level...
The Tooth About Anxiety
The other morning, the kids were putting their shoes on, almost ready to head out the door for school, when Amelia noticed something. Erin was filling out the dry erase board calendar on our refrigerator, putting in appointments and special days for the month. What...
It’s Whether You Get Up
Growing up in Wisconsin a Green Bay Packers fan, I have always of course been familiar with many quotes and nuggets of wisdom from legendary coach, Vince Lombardi. Lombardi quotes are part of the vernacular of Wisconsin, and are treated with a reverence that to an...

Guest Blog: A Big Tower Me and Henry Built
Yesterday morning, me and Henry built a really big tower. We built it out of cardboard blocks shaped like bricks. Some blocks were red, and some were blue and yellow. We built it very high. Almost to the ceiling. We built our tower higher than us. We worked together...

Slip Sliding Away
The truth is: I didn’t want to go strawberry picking. My wife, Sonia, and the girls Darian (age 12) and Amelia (age 9) had discussed this as a fun activity for one of our staycation days this week. I begged to differ. The thought of being outside in a field on a hot...
Aw, Fudge!
Last weekend, our family kicked off another rousing weekend of staying home and trying to entertain ourselves within the same 3-4 block radius in Washington, DC. As I woke up that Saturday morning, little did I know we would reach a quarantine milestone. We had to...

Guest Blogger Amelia Schneider: “Why I Want a Pool”
Editor’s Note: Amelia had an assignment to write an opinion piece about whether she would rather have a pool or trampoline at her house. She was struggling to find the motivation to do it (who can blame her...talk about a Sophie's choice), so I told her that I could...
